REL:adg <br />ii/5/8i <br /> <br />RESOLUTION NO. 81- 192 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE <br />CITY OF SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA, URGING <br />THE STATE BOARD OF PRISON TERMS TO RESCIND <br />THE EARLY RELEASE E~kTE FOR SIRHAN SIRHAN, <br />THE CONVICTED MURDERER OF ROBERT F. KENNEDY. <br /> <br />fatal gun <br />Robert F. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, in June <br />shot wounds upon <br />Kennedy, and <br /> <br />1968 Sirhan <br />Presidential <br /> <br />Sirhan inflicted <br /> Candidate Senator <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in 1969 a jury found that Sirhan Sirhan <br />had murdered Robert F. Kennedy with calculation and malice <br />forethought and sentenced him to death, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, this murder not only deprived Robert F. <br />Kennedy and his family of his life, but also deprived the <br />voters of California their chosen candidate for the highest <br />office in the land, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, this malicious act by Sirhan Sirhan <br />attacked the very foundation of our political system by <br />denying American voters their opportunity to freely elect <br />that individual who would lead them for the next four years, <br />and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the California Supreme Court subsequently <br />held the death penalty unconstitutional, and Sirhan Sirhan <br />was resentenced to life in prison, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in 1975 Sirhan Sirhan was given a <br />tentative release date of 1986, and the State Board of <br />Prison Terms subsequently advanced Sirhan Sirhan's release <br />date to September 1, 1984, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Sirhan Sirhan has been overheard by <br />fellow inmates to state that if released he would murder <br />Senator Edward Kennedy, younger brother of the late Robert <br />F. Kennedy, and Sirhan Sirhan is also known to have <br />threatened his former attorney, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, lenient treatment of murderers and <br />attempted murderers of political candidates will discourage <br />qualified people from seeking high office. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL <br />OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA that the City Council of the City <br />of Santa Ana respectfully urge that the State Board of <br />Prison Terms rescind Sirhan Sirhan's early release date and <br />ensure that he remain incarcerated for as long a period of <br />time as is permitted by law. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this <br />Resolution be forwarded to the State Board of Prison Terms, <br />to the Governor of the State of California, to the <br />California State Supreme Court, and to the California <br />Legislature, and <br /> <br /> <br />
