Architectural Standards - Historical Buildings <br /> <br />Buildings of historic significance or of historic architectural significance <br />shall adhere to the following standards: <br /> <br />Aiteration and rehabilitation of structures designated by the City <br />Council, State of California or the Federal Government as historic <br />structures and other buildings of historic architectural significance <br />shall comply with the "Secretary of the Interior's Standards for <br />Rehabilitation and Guidelines for Rehabilitating Historic Buildings." <br /> <br />Signage on historically significant buildings should reflect the classic <br />signage of the building's period. Gold leaf, raised brass lettering <br />or plaques, enameled finish or other traditional materials are <br />encouraged. <br /> <br />3. Stucco or related material which produces a smooth blank wall texture <br /> should be eliminated. <br /> <br />4. Modern, highly reflective glazing or unusually colored glazing and <br /> aluminum window molding should not be used on historic buildings. <br /> <br />New Construction and Facade Reconstruction <br /> <br />Remodeling of downtown buildings shall indorporate similar design concepts <br />and detail as other adjacent or nearby buildings. Unity of design, build- <br />ing materials and building function are major objectives. <br /> <br />The design of new buildings shall be sensitive to the historic nature <br />of downtown Santa Aha and shall physically relate to adjacent and nearby <br />buildings. Building mass, building scale and building materials shall <br />also be consistent with traditional buildings found in the downtown area. <br /> <br />Remodeled and new buildings may incorporate contemporary design themes/ <br />building materials if they relate to co~on themes found in the downtown <br />area. <br /> <br />Long uninterrupted horizontal facades should be avoided. <br /> <br />Curtain wall construction and "rows'!. or "stacks" of panels should be <br />avoided. Massing and block construction should be utilized. Building <br />wall offsets, recessed portals and pedestrian ways and appropriate build- <br />ing scale are important methods of "breaking up" a blank monotonous wall. <br /> <br />Shop awnings are encouraged over first and second level windows and doors. <br />Solid materials and an extension out over the public sidewalk of no more <br />than 3 feet shall be permitted. Note: A building permit is required for <br />all awnings. <br /> <br />Wrought iron bars over windows and/or doors is prohibited. <br /> <br />Folding metal security grills covering any part of a storefront are <br />prohibited. <br /> <br />- 49 - <br /> <br /> <br />
