REBOLUTION NO. 85- 10Z <br /> <br />A RE~OLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE <br />CITY OF SANTA ANA OPPOSING THE F~3]~{AL PROPOSAL <br />TO E~TABLISH INCREASED 0PPSHORE 0IL DRILLING ALONG <br />THE (RANGE COUNTY COASTLINE <br /> <br /> WH~P~EAS, the residents of Santa Aha are blessed with proximity <br />within miles of the beautiibl, unscarred Orange County coastline; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Orange County coastal area has been subject to a <br />moratorium on oil drilling which hss been renewed annu.~ly since 1982; and <br /> <br /> WHEqFAS, as a result of this moratorium, the environmental <br />balance along the Orange County shore is relatively stable at the present time; <br />end <br /> <br /> WN~°~EAS, the United States Department of the Interior has <br />proposed an agreement whereby 54 square miles of formerly unprotected ocean <br />floor off the coast of the Orange County communities of Huntington Beach and <br />Newport Beach would be offered for lease to oil ccmpanies by the federal <br />government; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, this proposed agreement is strongly opposed by the <br />Orange County coastal communities which would be drastically affected by the <br />consequences of increased offshore oil drilling; and <br /> <br /> WIt~REAS, these consequences include not or~ly the aesthetic~3]y <br />unpleasing specter of msssive oil drilling platforms, but also the prospect of <br />irreversible damage to the environment as a result of air and water pollution <br />resultiDg from oil drilling operations; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the opening of even a few of the protected tracts along <br />Orange County's coast to exploratory oil drilling could lead to frightening <br />environmental consequences if a major oil discovery is found; 8nd <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Santa Ana is also concerned about the <br />overall environment end well-being of the residents of the County of Orange as a <br />whole; <br /> <br /> NOW, TH~qEPORE, HE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of Santa Ana <br />does hereby express its opposition to the proposed agreement which would allow <br />increased offshore oil drilling along the Orange County coastline. <br /> <br /> <br />
