materials created, including a logo that utilizes a soccer theme, program <br />information included in conference packets, and posters and brochures designed <br />to educate zone residents relative to the goals and programs in the <br />Empowerment Zone. <br /> <br />Ms. Grant also presented the results of a resident survey developed to gain a <br />better understanding of the issues important to the constituency of the <br />Empowerment Zone. She explained that the information received from the <br />survey would be used to focus marketing efforts in the areas of the highest <br />importance to the residents. The survey consisted of six questions and 500 <br />surveys for each of the 3 zones were distributed. The surveys were completed <br />during the month of May using door-to-door canvassing. Ms. Grant reported that <br />even with the small sample obtained the survey provided researchers with a <br />variety of issues to target in upcoming marketing efforts. <br /> <br />Following Ms. Grant's presentation, Board members asked questions and <br />discussed various marketing strategies. <br /> <br />REPORT ON WHITE HOUSE CONFERENCE IN COLUMBUS, OHIO <br /> <br />Board Member Yanez gave a brief report on the White House Conference in <br />Columbus, Ohio which he attended with other members of the Empowerment <br />Zone Board. He noted that this was an opportunity to see people doing great <br />things in other areas of the country. He also noted that Santa Ana had made <br />great strides despite having a very small staff and small allotment of funding. <br />Board member Martinez reported that the Santa Ana group went out into the <br />communities to see projects. Board Member Garza noted that many of the cities <br />that receive 1st round funding received significant funding. <br /> <br />COMMENTS <br /> <br />PUBLIC COMMENTS <br /> <br />Ms. Mickie Welle addressed the Board with concerns about the safety of streets <br />within the Empowerment Zone.
