229 <br /> <br />RESOLUTION NO. 88-32 <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION OF THE SANTA ANA CITY COUNCIL <br /> SUPPORTING THE "WAR ON DRUGS" <br />AND PROCLAIMING THE WEEK OF MAY 8 - 13, 1988 <br /> AS "SAY NO TO DRUGS" WEEK <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the week of May 8 - 15, 1988 has been designated <br />"National Say No To Drugs Week"; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Orange County Sheriff and chiefs of police have <br />identified a severe problem of drug abuse which in Orange County <br />alone resulted in 180 drug-related deaths in 1987; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, there were 29 million doses of cocaine, 2-1/2 <br />million injections of heroin, and one million marijuana cigar- <br />ettes confiscated by the Orange County Regional Narcotics <br />Suppression program in 1987 which represented less than iS <br />percent of all drug traffic in the country; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the impact of drug abuse reaches people from all <br />walks of life and age groups and is being recognized as a <br />national epidemic; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, it is also recognized that Orange County citizens <br />working together with law enforcement can win the war on drugs; <br />and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Orange County Sheriff has called for a change <br />of attitude concerning the use of drugs by society as the major <br />weapon in the "War on Drugs;" and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, it will require all segments of the community to <br />join in the "War on Drugs" and REFUSE TO ABUSE in order to win <br />the war; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Orange County Division, League of California <br />Cities created a task force of city officials to recommend and <br />work with the sheriff and city police chiefs to marshall all <br />public and private resources to develop and implement a consis- <br />tent, countywide effort for a united drug abuse program in <br />Orange County. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Santa Ana City <br />Council join the "War on Drugs" and commit appropriate <br />resources to that war. <br /> <br /> <br />
