079 REL: 6/12/91 RESOLUTION NO. 91-116 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA MAKING CERTAIN FINDING WITH REGARD TO AMENDMENTS TO THE 1990 EDITION OF THE NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE. WHEREAS, the City Council proposes to approve an ordinance adopting the 1990 edition of the National Electrical Code published by the National Fire Protection Association; and WHEREAS, the City Council considers it necessary, because of local climactic, geological or topographical conditions, to amend certain building standards in the National Electrical Code, 1990 edition, as hereafter set forth; and WHEREAS, pursuant to sections 17958.5, 17958.7 and 18941.5 of the Health and Safety Code of the State of California, the City Council is required to make findings that such amendments are necessary due to local climactic, geological, or topographical conditions, and to file such findings, together with the amend- ments, with the Department of Housing and Community Development of the State of California; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA AS FOLLOWS: 1. Section 8-815 of the Santa Ana Municipal Code amends, and will continue to amend, section 210-1 of the National Electrical Code as follows: "Bee. 8-815. conductors (Section 110-5). Section 110-5 of the National Electrical Code is amended by adding a second sentence to read as follows: Ail sections of this National Electrical Code allowing the use of aluminum conductors are subject to the limitation that no aluminum conductor smaller than No. 6 AWG shall be used." The City Council hereby finds and determines that earthquakes are a common occurrence in the local area; that earthquakes may cause electrical connections and screws to loosen, causing heat problems especially in the smaller sizes of aluminum wire; and that the above amendment is necessary to address the risk of fire due to such causes.
