357 <br /> <br />RESOLUTION NO. 98- 0 58 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF <br />THE CITY OF SANTA ANA SUPPORTING THE <br />2002 CALIFORNIA POLICE SUMMER GAMES <br />AND SANTA ANA POLICE DEPARTMENT'S <br />BID TO HOST THE GAMES IN SANTA ANA <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the purpose of the California Police Summer Games (the Games) is to promote <br />friendship, sportsmanship, physical fitness and athletic competition among the law enforcement <br />community; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the first Games were held in San Diego in 1967, with 504 police athletes <br />competing in sixteen sports; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Games have grown annually in the number of competitors and sporting <br />events, with over 6,000 participating in 54 events in 1996; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the California Police Athletic Federation (CPAF) was founded in 1970 as a tax <br />exempt non-profit organization to plan and perpetuate the Games; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the CPAF requires that any police organization desiring to petition to host the <br />Games must first obtain the full support of its city, requiring that the hosting city provide the <br />necessary staff support to host the event; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, hosting of the Games would not only present a positive image of the. city of <br />Santa Ana, but also generate substantial revenues during the week-long event by the various hotels, <br />restaurants and vendors used by the competitors and their families; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, if Santa Ana is successful in its bid to host the 2002 Games, the City Council <br />declares that the proceeds derived therefrom, if any, shall benefit the DARE youth programs, the <br />Boys and Girls Clubs of Santa Aha, and the Police Association's Widows and Orphans Fund. There <br />is no fiscal impact associated with hosting the Games. <br /> <br /> <br />
