Number of unduplicated Santa Ana residents to be served with grant funds during the <br />12-month contract period = 50-80 PERSONS <br />II. Description ol'Work - in space below, describe the program to be fianded during the <br />12-month contract period including, services to be provided, program goals, client <br />characteristics. & how grant funds will be utilized. <br />The Academy wi I I be provided for 25 - 40, low to moderate income, at-risk African American <br />girls from the ages of 1 I - 14 and their mothers. They will participate in an organized program <br />lead by Sorority sisters versed in specific areas to be presented. The 10-session program will <br />include the following areas: <br />I . Math activities presented in a family math format that will be complemented by a <br />panel presentation by women who use math in their careers. (ie. banking, <br />insurance, teaching, engineering) <br />2. Science activities presented in a family science format that will be complemented <br />by a panel presentation by women who use science in their careers. (ie. chemist, <br />doctor, aerospace) <br />3. Reading to learn and reading for leisure through a Book Club discussion format <br />that will focus on African American history and contemporary issues. <br />4. Exploration of various uses of technology will be presented when the girls meet <br />at a computer lab at one of the schools to work on off-line and on-line activities; <br />visit the museum of Science and Technology, and speak to women who use <br />technology in their careers. (ie. hospitality, medicine, teaching) <br />5. Health and wellness will be presented through activities that will include an <br />exploration of healthy eating, skin care, exercise, and mental and physical <br />choices to promote growing older gracefully. <br />6. The girls will attend the Healthy Women's Symposium to further develop an <br />understanding ofthe need for individual, proactive health management. <br />7. The girls will present their etiquette, manners, and personal presentation skills <br />through participation in a fashion show and by hostessing a bunch or lunch for <br />their parents and supporters. <br />8. Becoming a mentor and working with a mentor will be the focus when helping <br />1 he girls understand the value of sharing their expertise and working with others <br />to hone their skit Is through a job skills workshop and service learning technology <br />project. <br />Exhibit A <br />
