WORK STUDY SESSION <br /> <br />Mayor Pro Tem Franklin and Councilmember Bist left the meeting <br /> <br />WS.A. <br /> <br />W/O/R/K. CENTER- Deborah Sanchez, Economic Development <br />Specialist Ill, Community Development Agency presented an update on <br />the activities of the Santa Ana W/O/P,/K Center. Highlights of this <br />presentation are as follows: <br /> <br />· City Council appointed a Workforce Investment Board comprised of <br /> 35 board members; 51% of the Board represents the Private Sector <br />· The W/O/R/K center provides a one-stop center for adults and <br /> youth seeking career focus, education, training, job search and <br /> employment, and provides services to companies interested in <br /> hiring and retaining employees <br />· The Center is a multi-agency center co-located with various state, <br /> county, education, and community based organizations to provide <br /> comprehensive services to the community <br />· The Center's goals include t he provision o f universal access a nd <br /> integration of services; the Center is customer focused, <br /> performance based, and outcome driven <br />· The City partners with many public, private and non-profit agencies <br />· There are four W/O/R/K Center locations within the City of Santa <br /> Aha <br />· The following services are provided for job seekers: job listings, <br /> layoff assistance, career counseling, workshops, skills assessment, <br /> supportive services, vocational training, ESL and GED classes and <br /> job search tools <br />· Using the Daisy Wheel model, the Santa Ana Youth Council <br /> coordinates tutoring, study skills training and drop out prevention <br /> programs for youth <br />· The Youth Council seeks out summer employment opportunities, <br /> internships, and job shadowing opportunities <br />· Also provided is occupational skills training and leadership <br /> development opportunities for youth <br />· Other services specifically for youth include: m entoring b y adults, <br /> comprehensive guidance and counseling, alternative secondary <br /> school referral, and follow-up for 12 months after program <br /> completion <br />· The Daisy Wheel Network is a collaborative funded through the <br /> Federal Empowerment Zone and includes the Cambodian Family, <br /> Catholic Charities, Community Action Partnership of Orange <br /> County, Delhi Center, Employment Development Department, <br /> Orange County Conservation Corps, Mexican American <br /> <br />CITY COUNCIL MINUTES 345 OCTOBER 20, 2003 <br /> <br /> <br />
