REQUEST FOR <br />COUNCIL ACTION <br /> <br />CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: <br /> <br />JANUARY 5, 2004 <br /> <br />TITLE: <br />APPROPRIATION ADJUSTMENT <br />PROJECT SAFE NEIGHBORHOODS <br />PROGRAM GRANT FUNDING <br /> <br />CLERK OF COUNCIL USE ONLY: <br /> <br />APPROVED <br /> <br />[] As Recommended <br />[] As Amended <br />[] Ordinance on l~Reading <br />[] Ordinance on 2 Reading <br />[] Implementing Resolution <br />[] Set Public Hearing For <br /> <br />CONTINUEDTO <br /> <br />FILE NUMBER <br /> <br />RECOMMENDED ACTION <br /> <br />Adopt a resolution authorizing the City Manager and Chief of Police <br />to execute a grant award agreement with the California Office of <br />Criminal Justice Planning (0CJP) for the Project Safe Neighborhoods <br />Program. <br /> <br />Approve an appropriation adjustment accepting and appropriating the <br />Project Safe Neighborhoods Program grant funds in the amount of <br />$75,0o0. <br /> <br />DISCUSSION <br /> <br />The Santa Ana Police Department has been awarded funding for the Project <br />Safe Neighborhoods Program through the California Office of Criminal <br />Justice Planning. The Program provides a 2.6 million dollar grant from <br />the Federal Office of Homeland Defense funded through the State of <br />California in a comprehensive approach to combat gun violence by linking <br />law enforcement, prosecutors, and community leaders to implement a multi- <br />faceted strategy to deter gun violence. The Police Department will use <br />these funds to enhance the efforts of its Career Criminal Unit with the <br />goal of creating safer neighborhoods by sustaining a reduction in gun <br />violence. Under Project Safe Neighborhoods, United States prosecutors are <br />prepared to bring cases involving illegal gun use to federal court. <br /> <br />Page 1 <br /> <br />20.A. <br /> <br /> <br />
