Include design, materials, condition, alterations, size, setting, and boundaries.) <br /> <br />Located on a double lot on the southeast comer of Heliotrope Ddve and Santa Clare Avenue, the Maharajah House is a two. <br />story residence representative of the Art Moderne vadant of the Modeme style. A fiat roof accented by a thin band at the <br />roofline tops the "7'" shaped building, which is finished in smooth stucco. Walls extend to the north and south to enclose <br />gardens and patios. The massing ~f the structure suggests an assemb~age ~f cubic v~~umes and re~ects the in~uence ~f the <br />emerging lntemational Style of architecture. The northwest and southwest comere of the second story of the facade are cut <br />away, creating terraces that ara seamlessly integrated into the massing. Horizontal lines am emphasized through the roofline <br />banding, similar banding around the terrace parapets, and architecturel details such as window gdlles and canopies. A <br />notable feature, and one highly characteristic of the style, is the use of multi-light metal casement windows that wrep the <br />comers of the building. Located at the approximate center of the facade and flanked by pilasters scored to resemble <br />masonry, the tripartite entry is deeply recessed and decoreted in an intricate, geometric pattern. An alle~ of palms is paved <br />in stone and spans the deep front lawn from the sidewalk to the entrance. On the north elevation, painted wrought iron gates <br />shield the garage. On the south, a bronze equestrian statue is just visible behind the garden wall. In excellent condition, the <br />property is substantially unaltered on the extedot~ <br /> <br />*P3b.
