COMMENTS <br /> <br />Announced that there was a planned reception sponsored by the <br />United States Tennis Association to encourage residents to support the <br />game of tennis; he noted that more information on the event will be <br />forthcoming <br /> <br />Councilmember Solorio <br />· Asked the Council to adjourn in r~emory of Marcos Chico, eight years <br /> old, who was struck and killed by a driver in an SUV near 14th Street <br /> and Grand Avenue on Saturday, December 20, 2003 while on a holiday <br /> shopping trip with his family; he further noted that friends of the family <br /> are collecting donations from the community to help cover medical and <br /> funeral expenses <br />· In September, three members of the Council had the opportunity to <br /> attend a ceremony sponsored by the Habitat for Humanity; at this <br /> event the city was presented with a plaque for its support <br />· Suggested that the issue of pedestrian safety should be the topic of an <br /> upcoming Council work study session <br />· Noted that he has noticed the increase of graffiti in the community and <br /> that additional outreach to homeowners is needed and aggressive <br /> cooperative partnerships with the homeowner associations are needed <br /> to address this problem. <br />· Announced that Hyundai Corporation contributed $50,000 to the City <br /> for Chess and Soccer programs in the City; he requested that a <br /> presentation be prepared for Hyundai to be presented at the next <br /> televised Council meeting <br /> <br />Councilmember Bist <br />· Reported that she had heard that the City may have to cut back on <br /> fireworks displays and that only one event would be held in the City; <br /> she noted that her preference would be to continue the displays on the <br /> 4th of July holiday <br />· Asked the Council to adjourn in memory of Peter Muth, a Santa Ana <br /> resident and prominent philanthropist and cofounder of the Stanton <br /> based Orco Block Co. Each year Peter and his wife contributed money <br /> to more than 75 nonprofit organizations, including Goodwill Industries, <br /> American Red Cross, the United Way and the YMCA Hotel for <br /> homeless women; they also provided anonymous scholarships to <br /> deserving students at Mater Del High School <br /> <br />Councilmember Alvarez <br />· Announced that on January 10, 2004, there would be a park clean-up <br /> event at Portola Park starting at 8:30 A.M.; she announced that all <br /> volunteers were welcome <br />· Thanked the City's firefighters for collecting Toys and distributing them <br /> at the various fire stations; she also thanked the Police Department for <br /> their efforts in collecting toys for the holidays <br /> <br />CITY COUNCIL MINUTES 16 JANUARY 5, 2004 <br /> <br /> <br />
