<br />are likely to participate in youth groups nearly four times as fi:equently and read for pleasure <br /> <br />nearly twice as often. Through this intervention, participants will exhibit improved academic <br /> <br />achievement and increased school attendance. Their achievement will enable students to be <br /> <br />transitioned to "mainstream" programs, including homework assistance, technology labs, career <br /> <br />preparation activities, and leadership positions. Research has also shown that monitoring school <br /> <br />attendance coupled with contingent reinforcement of attendance can reduce truancy in both <br /> <br />elementary and high school students. The excursions provided for improved school attendance <br /> <br />and academic achievement offer contingency rewards that provide opportunities to students and <br /> <br />their families that they would otherwise never have and will result in increased attendance and <br /> <br />reduced truancy which will lead to improved academic achievement. <br /> <br />Goal #3: Increase the ability of participants' parents to help their children succeed in school. <br /> <br />Objective #3: Provide opportunities for families to participate in positive activities in school, at <br /> <br />home and in the community, and provide education for parents to enable them to help their <br /> <br />children successfully complete their homework. <br /> <br />Activities and Output: <br /> <br />. A calendar of activities will be developed with Family PRIDE Club information, community <br /> <br />events, volunteer opportunities, school activities and events, and other family oriented <br /> <br />activities. 15 families of program participants will join their local Family PRIDE Club and <br /> <br />will complete 6 hours of volunteer service in one or more community events and participate in <br /> <br />6 family club activities, including citywide recreation activities that focus on teaching families <br /> <br />to use their leisure time in positive family recreation activities, where members interact with <br /> <br />positive peers in fun, stress relieving environments. <br /> <br />. 20 parents of program participants will complete a total of) parent education workshops <br /> <br />focusing on the importance of parent involvement in student achievement, how to <br /> <br />11 <br />
