COMMENTS <br /> <br />Councilmember Solorio: <br /> · Announced that the City's Youth commission sponsored a youth <br /> forum at which topics including education, gangs, recreation and <br /> drugs were discussed; over 90 students attended and the Youth <br /> Commission is working on a report for the City Council <br /> · Thanked the Mayor, City Manager Dave Ream and Jill Arthur for <br /> their efforts in tracking state issues with respect to budget funds <br /> · Asked staff to provide an update on the status of the proposed high <br /> school at Centennial including any remaining outstanding <br /> unresolved issues <br /> · Encouraged all registered voters to vote in the Special election on <br /> February 4, 2003 <br /> <br />Councilmember Christy: <br /> · Noted that the Black History Parade held in Santa Ana on February <br /> 1, 2003 was a great success and thanked all the City staff who <br /> worked to make the event successful <br /> · Asked the Council to adjourn in memory of Dr. Willis K. "Bill" Duffy <br /> Jr. who grew up in Santa Ana on Fourth Street; his father was <br /> Santa Ana's 1st African-American landowner and Dr. Duffy <br /> attended Santa Ana High School where he was an all-state football <br /> star as well as student body president. At 17, he graduated early to <br /> train as a Tuskegee Airman during World War I1. <br /> · Asked the Council to adjourn in memory of the seven astronauts on <br /> the Space Shuttle Columbia who died in a tragic space accident, <br /> · including Rick Husband, William McCool, Laurel Clark, Michael <br /> Anderson, David Brown, Kalpana Chawla, and Ilan Ramon <br /> · Encouraged all registered voters in the Santa Ana Unified School <br /> District to vote in the Special Election on February 4, 2003, and <br /> noted that this was an opportunity to make changes <br /> <br />Councilmember Bist: <br /> · Reminded residents that the City was closing the Santa Ana Animal <br /> Shelter on Grand, and that effective February 5, 2003, all calls <br /> related to lost pets or pet adoption should be referred to the Orange <br /> County Animal shelter <br /> · Reminded residents of the importance of the Santa Ana Unified <br /> School District Special Election on February 4, 2003 and noted that <br /> the polls would be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; she further <br /> noted that there were a limited number of polling places and asked <br /> all registered voters to verify their polling location before going to <br /> the polls <br /> <br />CITY COUNCIL MINUTES 57 FEBRUARY 3, 2003 <br /> <br /> <br />
