<br />CITY OF SANTA ANA <br />EDUCATION AND YOUTH PROGRAM <br />CITY COUNCIL COMMITTEE <br />November 6, 2003 <br /> <br />MINUTES <br /> <br />The meeting was convened at 6:00 p.m. in the City Hall, Room 831. <br /> <br />The following Council Members were present: <br /> <br />Mike Garcia <br />Alberta Christy arrived at 6:30 pm <br /> <br />Staffs present were: <br /> <br />Gerardo Mouet, Assistant Director, PRCSA <br />Mike Vigliotta, Deputy City Attorney <br />Ron Ono, Park Planning/Design Mgr., PRCSA <br />Mike Lopez, Park Superintendent, PRCSA <br />Lorraine Lazarine McCarty, Community Services Mgr., PRCSA <br />Patrick Mitchell, Park Naturalist, PRCSA <br />Dolores Ramos, Management Aide, PRCSA <br /> <br />Guest: <br /> <br />Rosa Noyola, Youth Commissioner <br /> <br />1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br />Approval of the September 4,2003 minutes postponed until the arrival of Alberta Christy. <br /> <br />2. CHILDREN'S WINTER HOLIDAY <br />Staff presented an outline and schedule for the 19th Annual Children's Winter Holiday Event <br />that will take place on Saturday, December 13, 2003 from 10:00 a.m. to 1 :00 p.m. at the <br />Santa Ana Stadium. Each year, the residents look forward to this annual event. <br />Approximately 6,000 children and adults attend the event. Admission is free and supported <br />heavily by donations oftoys and treats from businesses and other organizations. An <br />approximate $7,000 in cash donation was received, along with toy donations. The Master of <br />Ceremony will be Anita Ford and David Dobos. The event will include Disney Characters <br />(Mickey and Minnie Mouse), Santa and Mrs. Claus, sport contest, games ornamental <br />decorating, crafts, face painting, balloon bounce, etc. More than 150 people volunteer at the <br />event. <br /> <br />Alberta Christy arrived at 6:30 p.m. <br /> <br />3. PARK NATURALIST PROGRAM <br />Staff presented a power point presentation on the Park Naturalist Program. The program <br />gives kids from the lower income neighborhoods, the opportunity to learn about the <br />environmental issues and enjoy the natural landscaping within an urban environment. Staff <br />presented the vision and purpose of the Naturalist Program, along with key partners that <br />assist with the program, such as the Audubon Society, Wildlands Foundation, O.C. <br />Department of Education, DCI, and Santa Ana College, etc. <br />The Audubon Society helps to keep track of the 116 types of wild life that live or pass <br />through Santiago Park. The program recently provided education opportunities to 600 <br /> <br />138-8 <br />
