NO. 03-036) <br /> <br />f2A~- <br /> <br />CITY MANAGER <br /> <br />CONTINUED TO <br /> <br />FILE NUMBER <br /> <br />RECOMMENDED ACTION <br /> <br />Renew contracts for cellular phones, accessories, and airtime service <br />based upon State of California contracts for a period of one-year in a <br />total annual aggregate amount not to exceed $246,900 with: <br /> <br />Nextel Communications <br />Verizon Wireless <br /> <br />DISCUSSION <br /> <br />The City of Santa Ana utilizes cellular phones and airtime services for <br />field personnel and for staff required to respond in immediate or <br />emergency situations. Verizon Wireless provides a variety of analog <br />and digital cellular phones designed to meet the individual <br />requirements of staff. Nextel Communications provides a dual system <br />phone that functions both as a mobile phone and two-way radio, <br />providing a link between field personnel and office operations. Both <br />vendors provide various airtime plans to fit staff requirements. <br /> <br />In addition, on August 16, 2004, the City Council accepted a $15 <br />million Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) grant from the federal <br />Department of Homeland Security, through the State of California, <br />Office of Homeland Security. The ini tiati ve was designed to enhance <br />the domestic preparedness of urban areas by ensuring that all emergency <br />first responders have adequate equipment and systems to prevent, <br />respond to, and recover from acts of terrorism. The grant provides <br />total reimbursement to local agencies for equipment purchases approved <br />and authorized by the federal Office of Domestic Preparedness (ODP). <br />The recommended contract will include $50,000 from the UASI grant to <br />purchase equipment and airtime under the countywide emergency <br />notification project. <br /> <br />228-1 <br /> <br />CS_ 363 <br /> <br />
