Direct the City Attorney to prepare and authorize the City Manager and
Clerk of the Council to execute an agreement with Olympic Youth Soccer
League to provide healthy snacks at Spurgeon Intermediate School soccer
fields for a six-month period, with a provision for three one-year
extensions.

DISCUSSION

The City's youth serving sport organizations traditionally sell snacks
during practices and games as a means of generating revenue for their
programs. The City currently has concession agreements with each of the
Little Leagues who play in City parks. Because obesity is well documented
as a growing problem among our nation's school age children, the Parks,
Recreation and Community Services Agency is interested in providing healthy
alternatives to youth participating in park activities.

The recommended action will allow young athletes, their families and other
spectators to purchase healthy snacks from concession stands at Jerome Park
and Spurgeon Intermediate School soccer fields. The agreement stipulates
that youth soccer leagues will provide healthy snacks and disseminate
healthy nutrition and life style information.

25N-1
