Program Obiectives <br />The long-term goal for each child is the formation of a young person with life and leadership <br />skills, educational and career aspirations, and an ability to learn independently. <br />To achieve shorter -term goals, as soon as children become part of the After -School Learning <br />Center and prevention programs, they are set on a path for: <br />- Improved or passing grades <br />- Strengthened analytical and decision -making skills <br />- Life and work skills development <br />- Improved behavior and attitudes toward family, school and community <br />- Sense of self-esteem and an ability to plan for the future <br />- Drugs, alcohol abuse, violence and gang prevention. <br />Target Population <br />The After -School Learning Center specifically targets youth who: (1) are from schools that do <br />not have after school programs, (2) have low academic performance, (3) are identified as "hard <br />to reach," (4) are not participating in other extracurricular activities, and/or (5) are identified as <br />victims of domestic violence, child abuse or homelessness. Although participation is voluntary, <br />many youth are referred by local law enforcement, the criminal justice system and schools within <br />the S.A.U.S.D.
