Program Obiectives The long-term goal for each child is the formation of a young person with life and leadership skills, educational and career aspirations, and an ability to learn independently. To achieve shorter -term goals, as soon as children become part of the After -School Learning Center and prevention programs, they are set on a path for: - Improved or passing grades - Strengthened analytical and decision -making skills - Life and work skills development - Improved behavior and attitudes toward family, school and community - Sense of self-esteem and an ability to plan for the future - Drugs, alcohol abuse, violence and gang prevention. Target Population The After -School Learning Center specifically targets youth who: (1) are from schools that do not have after school programs, (2) have low academic performance, (3) are identified as "hard to reach," (4) are not participating in other extracurricular activities, and/or (5) are identified as victims of domestic violence, child abuse or homelessness. Although participation is voluntary, many youth are referred by local law enforcement, the criminal justice system and schools within the S.A.U.S.D. Nearly 100 percent of program participants are Hispanic.
