<br />RESOLUTION NO. 2004-096 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA <br />SUPPORTING THE CITY OF ANAHEIM'S EFFORTS TO <br />RETAIN THE NAME "ANAHEIM ANGELS" <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA AS <br />FOLLOWS: <br /> <br />Section 1. The City Council of the City of Santa Ana hereby finds, determines <br />and declares as follows: <br /> <br />A. In 1961, Gene Autry purchased a team franchise from Major League <br />Baseball, which team was located in the City of Los Angeles and named <br />the Los Angeles Angels. <br /> <br />B. The team was relocated by Gene Autry from the City of Los Angeles to the <br />City of Anaheim and, with the beginning of the 1966 baseball season, <br />commenced playing its home games in Anaheim Stadium as the California <br />Angels. <br /> <br />C. In 1996, the then team owner and the City of Anaheim executed a long- <br />term agreement arranging for the team to continue playing its home <br />games in the City of Anaheim, providing for the City to contribute more <br />than $20,000,000 toward the remodeling of Anaheim Stadium, and <br />requiring the team name to include the name "Anaheim" commencing with <br />the 1997 baseball season. <br /> <br />D. In conformance with its contractual obligations, the then team owner <br />changed the team name from the California Angels to the Anaheim Angels <br />by which name such team has been known, branded and identified since <br />1997. <br /> <br />E. In 2002 the Anaheim Angels baseball team won its first, and to date, only <br />Major League Baseball World Series championships, wearing "Anaheim" <br />jerseys in ballparks across the nation. <br /> <br />F. The Orange County community takes pride in the fact that the Anaheim <br />Angels are identified with Orange County and the surrounding region, and <br />takes pride in the recognition the Anaheim Angels have brought to the <br />entire County of Orange and surrounding region. <br /> <br />558-2 <br /> <br />Resolution No. 2004-XXX <br />Page 1 of 2 <br /> <br />
