Zoo Construction Rel!ulations

Construction Rel!ulations
The following regulations are to ensure the safety of both animals and construction workers.

. Please note that the zoo is open to the General Public from lOam to Spm daily,
. It should be kept in mind by the general contractor and his crew that construction activity
performed at a zoological facility is unique to that is performed on public and private
properties.
. Contractors shall play close attention to Contract Documents (plans and specifications); many
elements in zoo construction are different than that which may be considered "industry standards".
. Work hours: No work can occur after 4pm and the entire construction team shall leave the site no
later then 5pm.
. No construction workers are to be in an off-exhibit area unless that area is within the scope of
work and members of the construction crew have consent of the Project Manager and Zoo Director.
. Construction workers shall not enter/cross through an off-exhibit area that is not within a
project's scope of work. If workers need access, they must first obtain permission of Project Manager
and Zoo Director.
. Construction workers are not to have access to any animal exhibit area. If workers need access,
they must first obtain permission of Project Manager and Zoo Director.
. Contractors shall be responsible for providing their own materials and equipment, Equipment
and construction materials shall not be "borrowed" from Zoo inventory.
. At NO time shall any worker attempt to touch or have physical contact with any zoo animal.
This includes leaning on fences or exhibit caging.
. At NO time shall any worker attempt to offer food, drink, ice or any object to any zoo animal,
. Construction workers are to use public restrooms or their own portable toilets, Construction
workers shall not use staff restrooms,
. Construction crew shall do their best to minimize noise levels whenever possible,
. General Contractor, when considering his schedule, shall attempt to minimize on-site work,
Contractor shall not begin any physical work unless he can ensure that it can be completed in a timely
manner.
. Construction crew shall work as expeditiously as possible while on site, in an effort to minimize
disruption to zoo employees and visitors,
. Construction crew shall not conduct construction activity or drive construction vehicles
through any public areas, If this must occur, Contractor shall immediately contact Project Manager
and Zoo Director, and coordinate all activities closely and expeditiously.
. Construction crew shall park vehicles in approved locations only.
. There is a S-mph speed limit inside the zoo,
. All OSHA safety standards shall apply for the duration of the project,
. The work area must be properly barricaded and secured, Caution tape, "snow fence", etc. are not
permitted.
. Daily job site cleanup is required, to prevent an animal safety hazard, Metal debris and other
materials (wire, screws, nails, etc.) that are sharp, pointed or can blow around should be kept picked
up on an almost constant basis and at end of day, should be contained in such a way to prevent
spreading of these materials and/or burying of materials in substrate (to be later raked up by a keeper
or dug up by an animal), etc.

6
