In January 2004, the Parks, Recreation and Community <br />Services Agency was successful in receiving a Title II grant in the amount <br />of $200,000 for the implementation of the Leadership Development Strategy <br />program. The program has been successfully developed and implemented at <br />the Mc Fadden Learning and Technology Center and the City is now eligible <br />to apply for second year funding. <br /> <br />The Leadership Development Strategy was developed as a supplemental <br />service with the purpose of reducing the number of suspensions and <br />expulsions at target area schools. Program activities include leadership <br />development opportunities, peer and police officer mentoring, teen club <br />acti vi ties, tutoring, educational excursions, family oriented recreation <br />acti vi ties, and parent education workshops. If awarded, the program will <br />continue to serve a total of 60 students and their families from Spurgeon <br />Intermediate and Lincoln, Monte Vista, and Jackson elementary schools. <br />Upon approval of the resolution, the Parks, Recreation and Community <br />Service Agency will submit the required grant application to be considered <br />for second year funding in the amount of $200,000. <br /> <br />55A-1 <br />
