MINUTES OF THE ADJOURNED REGULAR MEETING <br />OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br /> SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA <br /> <br />June 27, 1984 <br /> <br />The meeting was called to order at 7:36 p.m. by Vern Evans, President <br />of the Rancho Santiago Co~unity College District Board, in Johnson <br />Center, Santa Ana College. Councilmembers present were Gordon <br />Bricken, Daniel E. Griset, P. Lee Johnson, Patricia A. McGuigan, and <br />Mayor R. W. Luxembourger. Also present were City Manager Robert C. <br />Bobb, City Attorney Edward J. Cooper and Clerk of the Council Janice <br />C. Guy, as well as members of the College Board of Trustees, the Board <br />of Education, staff of the respective groups and the press. <br />Councilmember Dan Young joined the meeting at 7:45 p.m.; Councilmember <br />John Acosta was absent. <br /> <br />Following the Pledge of Allegiance, all those present gave self- <br />introductions. The City Manager had a slide presentation shown for <br />the group prepared by the Santa Ana Economic Development Corporation <br />which d~monstrated the effort being made to market Santa Ana. He <br />commented that the City needed close ties with the educational <br />institutions and that Santa Ana was an urban con*nunity which considers <br />the needs of all its residents. <br /> <br />Dr. John Dunworth discussed briefly Santa Ana Unified School <br />District's overriding concern--overcrowding at all levels in the <br />City's schools. Dr. Robert Ryan reported on the levels of achievenent <br />attained by Santa Ana students, indicating that at all <br />levels--elementary, intermediate, and high school--local students on <br />average were exceeding national norms. <br /> <br />Dr. WilliamWenrich noted the concerns and plans of the College <br />District, indicating the College was yet to experience the impacts of <br />the imposition of a tuition fee in the Fall. He expressed the opinion <br />that coranunity access television would enhance educational efforts. <br />Dr. Robert Jensen, incoming president for the College, reported that <br />he had noted pride and enthusiasm in the co--unity on the part of its <br />residents. He stated that the agencies present had a co~non goal of <br />serving their constituents and indicated the willingness of the <br />College to do its share in the community. <br /> <br />The elected representatives and several staff members then discussed <br />the following: <br /> <br />Possible cooperation between the College and School <br />District regarding the education of older non-English <br />speaking students. <br /> <br />City Council Minutes 241 JUNE 27, 1984 <br /> <br /> <br />
