Councilmember Alvarez <br />• Noted that the June 24th retreat was a step in the right direction and <br />congratulated staff and the Council for their efforts <br />• Reported that Chief Walters recently held a press conference in <br />conjunction with other enforcement agencies announcing the <br />culmination of an investigation targeting illegal drug activity <br />• Invited all residents to attend the always entertaining Summer Concert <br />in Wilshire Square <br />• Commended the Fire and Police departments for their diligent <br />response to potential dangerous situations on July 4th; she <br />recommended looking at what other cities are doing relative to <br />fireworks and also encouraged non-profit organizations to look at <br />alternative fundraisers <br />Councilmember Bustamante <br />• Expressed concerns relative to safety on the Bike Trail and asked staff <br />to prepare a report and also work with the Discovery <br />Science Center relative to security issues in the area <br />• Thanked his colleagues for a successful retreat <br />• Announced that a recent Orange County Register column reported that <br />the three top selling zip codes for home sales are in Santa Ana <br />• Welcomed the newest member of the Bustamante family — his niece, <br />Isabella Sofia who was born on Father's Day and weighed 7 pounds 6 <br />ounces; he congratulated his brother Dr. Al Bustamante and his wife <br />Patricia on their first child <br />• Said goodbye to Debra Kurita and wished her well on her new career <br />as City Manager in the City of Alameda <br />Mayor Pulido <br />• Noted that the easy solution would be to ban fireworks, however, the <br />City needs to be creative and work with the Public Safety Committee to <br />find ways to discourage bad activity associated with illegal fireworks <br />• Invited Debbie Kurita, Assistant City Manager, to the podium so that <br />the Council could present her with a floral bouquet in recognition of her <br />over 20 years of invaluable service to the City <br />The Council thanked Debra Kurita for her outstanding work as the <br />Assistant City Manager, and wished her success in her new position as <br />City Manager for the City of Alameda in Northern California. <br />CITY COUNCIL MINUTES 264 JULY 5, 2005 <br />
