Description of Work - in space below, describe the program to be funded during the 12-
month contract period including, services to be provided, program goals, client
characteristics, & how grant funds will be utilized.
The Bowers Kidseum After School Leaming Center is a program that is designed to give
children from grades 2 -10 exposure and experiences in the cultural arts, through classes
in studio arts, dance, piano lessons and creative writing. The children will also have an
opportunity to visit the Bowers Museum's permanent galleries and the special exhibit,
"Mummies, Life and the Afterlife in Ancient Egypt." There will be, "town hall,"
meetings, where subjects of special interests will be discussed, i.e.: bullies, proper
manners, world geography, kindness to others, etc. Field trips will be provided to such
venues, as: The Aquarium of the Pacific, in Long Beach and the Museum of Tolerance in
Los Angeles. The goal of the program is to give the children the cultural experiences and
enrichment that will give them a broader worldview, an advantage for better grades, and a
greater appreciation for the art and traditions of the world's many cultures, including their
own. The majority of the children served are not achieving their full potential in school,
and they do not have resources for cultural experiences or academic role models. Most
would spend their after school hours in front of a T.V. set, or out on dangerous
neighborhood streets, if they did not attend our program.
The funds will be used for the wages of the program instructors.
