Description of Work - in space below, describe the program to be funded during the 12 -month
contract period including, services to be provided, program goals, client characteristics, & how
grant funds will be utilized.
Taller San Jose (St. Joseph's Workshop), a non-profit community based organization established
by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, has one focused mission—to provide education and job -
training to undereducated and unskilled young adults, ages 18 to 28.
Located in downtown Santa Ana, Taller San Jose addresses the needs of a neglected population—
unemployed young adults, ages 18 to 28, who never completed high school, who have run into
trouble with the law and who have fallen through the cracks of existing support services. Gang
involvement, juvenile crime and incarceration, drug use, and early, unplanned pregnancies all
contribute to this high dropout rate. Taller San Jose is a highly focused, goal -oriented program
that challenges its students to build a foundation for future stability and success. Program
elements include: a high school diploma program, job training leading to certification in
residential construction, convalescent nursing, and computer technology and repair, a life skills
program, job placement, counseling, legal consultation for students dealing with warrants and
arrests, mentoring access to childcare services and bus passes.
Within the period of one year, we ask students to complete five of the following seven goals:
1) Complete a high school program, 2) Master basic computer skills, 3) Attain a driver's
license, 4) Open and use a bank account, 5) Stay crime free for a minimum of one year, 6) Get
a job that pays above minimum wage, 7) Register to vote
Since its inception in October 1995, Taller San Jose has provided education and job -training to
over 3000 young people. Students are referred by Santa Ana high schools, community
organizations and the Orange County Probation Department. In just nine years, Taller San Jose
has demonstrated significant results: 86% of students who complete their program goals will
move on to community college or employment above the minimum wage; and 97% of program
participants remain free of violent crime.
Schedule of Performance
Estimate the number of unduplicated Santa Ana residents to be served during the 12 -month
contract period per quarter
Quarter 1:
July 1 - September 30
150
Persons
Quarter 2:
October 1 - December 31
40
Persons
Quarter 3:
January 1 - March 31
60
Persons
Quarter 4
April 1 - June 30
50
Persons
Total
300
Persons
Invoicing Schedule
Estimate the amount of grant funds to be requested during the 12 -month contract period on a
quarterly basis
Quarter 1: July 1 - September 30
Quarter 2: October I - December 31
Quarter 3: January 1 - March 31
Quarter 4 April 1 - June 30
$
8,500
$
8,500
$
8,500
$_8
500 -
Total $
34,000
EXHIBIT A
