Professional Disc for DATA gives more
storage capacity, performance and reliability
from Day One... and better still it's built to
keep pace with fast-growing business
storage needs for years to come_ Current
drives and media will offer backward
compatibility with the next generation of
Professional Disc for DATA products that will
boost performance to 50 GB storage
capacities with a transfer rate of 22 MB/s.
rutur, genes rht n !,,v,_-, and media will
r rtt nd these rsfa abilities further still. offering
100 GB storage capacities with a read data
transfer rate of 43 MB/s by 2007.
Professional Disc toy DATA uses
latest Sony phase change
recording technologies to store
data with a higher density,
reliability and transfer speeds
than other optical formats. By
reducing the wavelength at
laser light frorn red to blue/
violet with a wavelength of just
405 nm, the narrower beam
spot enables higher recording
densities some 2-6 times that of
the red laser technology used
for conventional optical media.
Moreover, the powerful
objective lens used for focusing
the laser beam has a numerical
aperture of 0 85 greater than
that used for DVDs I[1A: 0 ni
l d MO discs (NA
Future Roadmap
5OGB
22MB/s
., 23GB
11MB/s
4 14
t1
0.575) - narrowing the beam
further and doubling recording
density. The resulting track
pitch of just 0.32 pm makes it
possible to record 23 GB on
one side of a disc - far higher
than CD, DVD and other optical
storage formats.
The overall thickness of the 120
mm disc is 1.2 mm, the same
as that of a DVD disc. However,
the recording layer has a cover
layer of just 0.1 mm thickness
that Increases the margin of
error when the disc tilts or
bends. improving tilt tolerance
compared with convenlion;d
oplical discs and enhancing
rel utility of read mite operafions.
CD
A =780 nm
NA -0 45
1 2mm cover leyet
650MB
1000B
43MB/s
DVD
A =650 n m
NA=0.6
0.6mm cover layer
—4—
Blue Laser
A =405 nm
NA -0 85
0.1mm cover layer
23GB
sony developed Blue Laser phase change recording tech oology enables
higher density re anrdiag densities coin pxed with ohc ptical formai s.
