<br />REQUEST FOR <br />COUNCIL ACTION <br /> <br />~ <br />~ <br /> <br />CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: <br /> <br />CLERK OF COUNCIL USE ONLY: <br /> <br />SEPTEMER 19, 2005 <br />TITLE: <br />ADOPT A RESOLUTION APPROVING THE <br />REDESIGNED ELEVATION FOR BOWERS <br />MUSEUM <br /> <br />12d~ <br /> <br />CITY MANAGER <br /> <br />APPROVED <br /> <br />o As Recommended <br />o As Amended <br />o Ordinance on 1st Reading <br />o Ordinance on 2nd Reading <br />o Implementing Resolution <br />o Set Public Hearing For <br /> <br />it <br /> <br />CONTINUED TO <br /> <br />--- <br /> <br />FILE NUMBER <br /> <br />RECOMMENDED ACTION <br /> <br />Adopt a resolution approving the redesigned elevation for Bowers Museum. <br /> <br />DISCUSSION <br /> <br />In approving the various actions for the Bowers Museum expansion, the <br />City Council on September 6, 2005, added a condition requiring a redesign <br />of the arched entry facing Main Street, subject to its final review and <br />approval. <br /> <br />The Bowers Museum team has thoroughly re-evaluated the entry at the <br />Council's request and has concluded that the best approach is to <br />eliminate the arch and revise the configuration of the exit doors <br />(Exhibit 1). Additionally, the elevation has been revised to incorporate <br />a rectangular projection that would be clad with a genuine stone <br />material, most likely travertine. This same stone material would also be <br />used on elements of the north elevation for continuity. The <br />architectural projection extends approximately six feet from the primary <br />elevation and it incorporates a large transparent window facing Main <br />Street. This window affords a glimpse into the museum from the street. <br />The Bowers Museum intends to locate a sculpture behind this window, which <br />will be illuminated at night, in order to engage pedestrians and <br />passersby along Main Street. The horizontal cut-out located south of the <br />display window adds to the asymmetric composition and serves to enhance <br />security of the pathway leading to the exit doors. <br /> <br />The revised plans simplify the elevation with clean rectilinear lines. <br />This now more contemporary feature also strengthens the museum's function <br />of exhibiting art and cultural artifacts through the display window. As <br />revised, this feature is not overly decorative and thus it does not <br />conflict with or detract from the original historic museum wing or its <br />features. Elimination of this secondary entry also adds emphasis and <br /> <br />
