Approve an appropriation adjustment recognizing the FY 2005 Paul <br />Coverdell Forensic Improvement Grant funds in the amount of $48,188 <br />into the revenue account (account no. 128-01-5369) and appropriate <br />same into the FY 2005 Paul Coverdell Forensic Improvement Grant <br />expenditure accounts (account nos. 128-348-various). <br /> <br />DISCUSSION <br /> <br />The United States Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs has <br />awarded the Santa Ana Police Department a $48,188 grant for the FY 2005 <br />Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grant Program. This program <br />provides funding to state and local governments to improve the quality and <br />timeliness of forensic science and medical examiner services and/or to <br />eliminate backlogs in the analysis of forensic evidence, including <br />controlled substances, firearms examination, forensic pathology, latent <br />prints, questioned documents, toxicology, and trace evidence. <br /> <br />The Santa Ana Police Department will utilize a portion of the grant monies <br />to fund a part-time latent print examiner to help diminish and/or <br />eliminate the current backlog of print cases during the period of the <br />grant. The funding will also allow the department to expedite the <br />education and training of an existing full-time Forensic Specialist I I, <br />which would allow for improved quality and delivery of forensic science <br />analysis in the future. <br /> <br />20A-1 <br />
