<br />D. Limit. Effective January 1, 2006, the maximum total <br />accumulation of sick leave with pay shall be 2,000 hours <br />for employees working an eight-hour day and 3,000 hours <br />for employees working a twelve-hour day. Sick leave <br />usage of less than a full day shall be charged in minimum <br />increments of one (1) hour, with fractional usage rounded <br />upward to the next higher multiple of one (1). For <br />affected employees assigned to the 24-hour work shift <br />schedule, the minimum sick leave increment is three (3) <br />hours, with fractional usage rounded upward to the next <br />higher multiple of three (3). <br /> <br />E. Extended. The City Manager may grant leave up to six (6) <br />months without pay to an employee who has exhausted all <br />of his or her accrued sick leave if the City physician, <br />or a licensed physician designated by the City Manager, <br />indicates that the employee will be sufficiently <br />recovered to return to his or her employment within a six <br />(6) months period. Prior to the expiration of the <br />additional time, the employee may return to his or her <br />position provided that he or she has a certificate from <br />one of the above mentioned physicians stating that the <br />employee is able to perform all the duties of his or her <br />position without qualification. In addition to the above, <br />the City Manager may grant a further extension not to <br />exceed a total of one (1) year without pay. <br /> <br />F. Extension by Use of Vacation. After an employee's sick <br />leave has been exhausted he or she may be granted <br />permission to take any earned vacation he or she may have <br />accrued. <br /> <br />G. Notice. The employee taking sick leave shall notify his <br />or her immediate supervisor either prior to or within <br />four (4) hours after the time he or she is scheduled to <br />report for duty, or as otherwise established by <br />departmental regulations. When the absence is more than <br />three (3) consecutive working days, or more than three <br />(3) consecutive scheduled shifts for affected employees <br />assigned to the twenty-four (24) hour shift schedule, the <br />employee must present to the Fire Chief a physician's <br />certificate stating the cause of illness and that, in the <br />physician's opinion, the employee could not report to <br />work because of such illness or injury and that the <br />employee is sufficiently recovered to safely return to <br /> <br />36 <br />
