Next comes the "table of contents", which will locate all sections. Each year the
various sections are moved around in the book so look to see where they are located
in you're particular edition.
Next is a section called "Cities and Communities". A city is an incorporated
government with fire, police, city hail, etc. A community is an area within a city or
county, i.e. Hancock Park, Anaheim Hills, Emerald Bay, Van Nuys etc. Listed here
is the name of the city or community, its abbreviation (You'll notice that the
abbreviations for cities are all capital letters and communities capitalize only the
first letter. This is followed by the zip code.
Miles to Orange County, Santa Ana or, Los Angeles (this will help you estimate
fares and times) population, square miles and the map page where you will find that
city or community. That page is in the "Detailed Pages" section and shown on the
big map in the "Key Map" section.
Next is the Zip Code section. This section has an index that lists communities,
which of the two Zip Code section pages they are on and the number of the grid is
the detail page number.
The next section is "Key Map to Detail Pages". Detail pages are the pages that
show the streets and everything on them. The "Key Map" is referred to as the "big
map ". Here you will find an overview of your county. You will notice that it is
divided into grids with numbers on each grid. These numbers are the map page
numbers where that area will be found in detail. You will also notice that all cities
and communities, freeways and many major streets are pictured. This is a quicker
way to route longer trips and assist with finding the correct map page for detail.
This is followed by the "Orange County Freeway Access Map ". On the first page
is an index of all the Freeways in numerical order and the name of each freeway.
Every freeway on and off ramp is listed in this section. The list of symbols for this
section is listed on the fourth page. On / off and carpool ramps have different
symbols. Every off ramp has the street name listed at the on/off ramp symbol. For
the most part, ramps are located at major thorough fares. This will help you use the
freeway system more efficiently and help you find alternate routes if the freeway is
blocked or stalled. Familiarize yourself with the index and the symbols. Practice
looking up ramps and alternate routes. Have alternates in your head in advance to
facilitate your trip. Next is the "Orange County Airport "schematic drawing,
showing both upper and lower levels, including roadways, and terminals. At the
bottom of the page is listed terminals A, and B, and what airlines are at each one.
Because of the addition of new airlines, if you do not see the one you are looking
for in the map book, ask your dispatcher to help locate it.
The next page is the "Legend of Map Symbols ".
