MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING <br />OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA <br /> <br />SEPTEMBER 19, 1988 <br /> <br />The meeting was called to order at 4:15 p.m. in Room 423, City Hall, <br />20 Civic Center Plaza, by Mayor Dan Young. Councilmembers present were <br />John Acosta, Wilson B. Hart, Ron M~, Patricia A. McGuigan, Miguel A. <br />Pulido and Mayor Young. Also present were City Manager David N. Ream, <br />City Attorney Edward J. Cooper and Clerk of the Council Janice C. Guy. <br /> <br />Councilmember Daniel E. Griset joined the meeting at 4:53 p.m. <br /> <br />COUNCIL STUDY SESSION <br /> <br />STREET TREE PROGRAM <br /> <br />Larry Christian, Maintenance Manager, Public Works Agency, provided an <br />update on the Street Tree Program initiated in fiscal year 1987-88. He <br />explained that since the inception of the Program the City Council had <br />authorized 22 contracts in the amount of $1,500,000.00 for the planting, <br />removal, and trimming of trees within the City. Christian responded to <br />Councilmembers' questions with regard to the Program particularly <br />concerning termite damage to older trees. <br /> <br />Councilmember May requested that staff provide advance warning both to the <br />residents and respective Councilmember relative to Street Tree Program <br />activity in specific neighborhoods. <br /> <br />Georgene Tarbox, 410 S. Broadway, expressed concern regarding the removal <br />of older trees in her neighborhood, which, in her opinion, resulted in <br />loss of ambiance and neighborhood charm. <br /> <br />The Mayor indicated that preservation of as many older trees as possible <br />should be a goal of the Program. <br /> <br />NEW JAIL INITIATIVE <br /> <br />Mayor Young informed the Councilmembers that he would be requesting their <br />support at the Evening Session of the Council meeting for an initiative <br />which would prohibit the Board of Supervisors from locating any new jail <br />in any incorporated city in Orange County and further require that any new <br />jail site be at least one mile from any existing school site. <br /> <br />CONSENT CALENDAR REVIEW <br /> <br />Councilmembers discussed concerns with respect to Consent Calendar Items. <br /> <br />CITY COUNCIL MINUTES 282 SEPTEMBER 19, 1988 <br /> <br /> <br />
