<br />REQUEST FOR <br />COUNCIL ACTION <br /> <br />~ <br />~ <br /> <br />CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: <br /> <br />CLERK OF COUNCIL USE ONLY: <br /> <br />FEBRUARY 21, 2006 <br />TITLE: <br />RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING <br />PARTICIPATION IN THE STATE <br />DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS AND <br />REHABILITATION, CORRECTIONS <br />STANDARDS AUTHORITY'S TITLE II <br />PROGRAM GRANT <br /> <br />APPROVED <br /> <br />o As Recommended <br />o As Amended <br />o Ordinance on 151 Reading <br />o Ordinance on 2nd Reading <br />o Implementing Resolution <br />o Set Public Hearing For <br /> <br />;J~~J? tZ~- <br /> <br />CITY MANAGER <br /> <br />CONTINUED TO <br /> <br />FILE NUMBER <br /> <br />RECOMMENDED ACTION <br /> <br />Adopt a resolution authorizing the submittal of a grant application in the <br />amount of $200,000 to the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, <br />Corrections Standards Authority's Title II to continue the Leadership <br />Development Strategy at the McFadden Learning and Technology Center. <br /> <br />DISCUSSION <br /> <br />-' <br /> <br />In January 2004, the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Agency was <br />successful in receiving grant funds in the amount of $200,000 from the <br />Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Corrections Standards <br />Authori ty' s Title II Delinquency Prevention and Intervention Program for <br />the implementation of the Leadership Development Strategy at the McFadden <br />Learning and Technology Center. The intent of program is to provide a <br />comprehensive, coordinated approach to the problems of juvenile <br />delinquency through the cooperative efforts of the community and law <br />enforcement. The program has been successfully developed and implemented <br />at the Mc Fadden Learning and Technology Center and the City is now <br />eligible to apply for third year funding. <br /> <br />The Leadership Development Strategy was developed with the purpose of <br />reducing the number of suspensions and expulsions at target area schools. <br />Program activities include leadership development opportunities, peer and <br />police officer mentoring, teen club activities, tutoring, educational <br />excursions, family oriented recreation activities, and parent education <br />workshops. The program will continue to serve a total of 60 students and <br />their families from Spurgeon Intermediate and Lincoln, Monte Vista and <br />Jackson elementary schools. Upon approval of the resolution, the Parks, <br />Recreation and Communi ty Service Agency will submit the required grant <br /> <br />55A-1 <br />
