'-"

-....I

VI.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVESI
IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY

In the space below, please list the primary goals and objectives for your program. Provide
projected numbers of Santa Ana residents to be seMd, and the kinds of services t/;ley would
receive if your program is funded. Also describe the specific actions and tasks that muld be
performed on a day-to-day basis to achieve these goals.
GOALS:
· To provide an after-school program for children in grades 4,5,6 & 7 that utilizes the cultural art;s
including art and music for their educational advancement and cultural enrichment
· To provide quarterly Family Nights for the parents of the children participating in the After School
Learning Center
OBJECTIVES:
. 80 City of Santa Ana children will receive the supervised educational advancement and cultural
enrichment program Monday - Friday, from 3 :00 PM to 5:30 PM during the 2002-2003 school
year, excluding school holidays
. 4 Family Nights will be held (quarterly) when the children in the After School Learning Center
perform for their parents and exhibit their art projects
TASKS/ACTIONS:
· Children from Davis Elementary School and Willard Middle School (both schools are in the Santa
Ana Unified School District and are year-around schools) will be identified by the school principal
and teaching staffas under-achieving children in need of tutoring and educational enrichment to
reach their full academic potential
. The After School Program curriculum is planned quarterly and is connected to the permanent and
special one-time exhibits at Bowers. For example, during the special exhibit Trilogy of Glass work:
Ancient Rome, Chihuly, Yang, children explored methods of glassmaking, glassblowing, and lost
wax casting. They toured the exhibit; visited a glass artist in his studio at Santa Ana College, had 3
lectures by an art historian on ancient Rome. Internationally-known glassblower John Barber
hosted the students in his Laguna Beach studio. Each student was given a small glass egg to paint;
John then blew into the shape of the student's choice. This glass art will be displayed at the end-
of-the-quarter Family Night art exhibition. Similar curriculum development accompanies all the
special exhibits at Bowers: Remington, Russell and the Language of Western Art and (currently)
The Holy Land: David Roberts, Dead Sea Scrolls, & the House of David Inscription.
. 4 Family Night exhibitions and performances are held at the end of each quarter. This year,
approximately 300 parents, siblings and teachers attended.
. Next year, the UCI Humanities Out There writing program will be offered to the children; taught
by UCI graduate students.
. Services and activities provided to the children in the Kidseum After School Program include:
. after-school snack, arts and crafts projects
. books and videos on art, geography and cultures of the world
. hands-on experiences with many different kinds of artifacts
. after-school academic tutoring
. lessons in dance, acting and choral music
The program is a collaborative venture among the City of Santa Ana, the Santa Ana Unified
School District, numerous Orange County foundations and corporations and Kidseum, with each
partner contributing funding, staff and materials.

EXHIBIT A
