<br />REQUEST FOR <br />COUNCIL ACTION <br /> <br />~ <br />~ <br /> <br />CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: <br /> <br />CLERK OF COUNCIL USE ONLY: <br /> <br />MAY 1, 2006 <br /> <br />TITLE: <br /> <br />APPROVED <br /> <br />JJ <br />, <br /> <br /> <br />o As Recommended <br />o As Amended <br />o Ordinance on 1" Reading <br />o Ordinance on 2"" Reading <br />o Implementing ResolutiDn <br />o Set Public Hearing For <br /> <br />DEPARTMENT OF LABOR YOUTH <br />EARMARK GRANT - SANTA ANA <br />YOUTH CENTER <br /> <br />CONTINUED TO <br /> <br />FILE NUMBER <br /> <br />RECOMMENDED ACTION <br /> <br />Direct the City Attorney to prepare and authorize the City Manager to <br />designate the Executive Director of the Community Development Agency to <br />execute an agreement with the Department of Labor and the City of Santa <br />Ana, Santa Ana W/O/R/K Center, in the amount of $198,400 to provide a <br />comprehensive youth-oriented employment, training and educational <br />center. <br /> <br />DISCUSSION <br /> <br />On May 23, 2005, the Department of Labor, Employment and Training <br />Administration (DOL/ETA) awarded to the City of Santa Ana, Santa Ana <br />W/O/R/K Center, a $198,400 grant for two years beginning March 1, 2006, <br />to establish the Santa Ana Youth Center (SAYC) and provide services to <br />40 at-risk Santa Ana youth 16-21 years of age. In collaboration with <br />the Santa Ana Workforce Investment Board, the Youth Council Youth <br />Service Provider Network and the Santa Ana W/O/R/K Center, the SAYC <br />plans to bring together service providers that offer career preparation, <br />job search, occupational skills training, supportive services and <br />resource referrals in a youth-friendly and supportive environment where <br />services are integrated and comprehensive. <br /> <br />The program focus for younger youth will be to enable them to stay in <br />school and obtain their high school diplomas, increase their awareness <br />of their career options and the preparation necessary to be successful <br />in their careers. <br /> <br />25G-1 <br />
