KO- 8110/06 <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2006- <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />SANTA ANA DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO <br />ADOPT A POLICY ON HEALTHY SNACKS IN VENDING <br />MACHINES AT CITY OWNED FACILITIES <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA AS <br />FOLLOWS: <br />Section 1. The City Council of the City of Santa Ana hereby finds, determines <br />and declares as follows: <br />A. The residents of Santa Ana face many challenging health issues including <br />a high rate of obesity, which directly relates to food choices and sedentary <br />lifestyles. <br />B. In a recent study, the assembly district that includes Santa Ana ranked <br />second worst in the state, with 36.1 percent of children being overweight, <br />and 42.75 percent being unfit. <br />C. The City currently provides beverage and snack vending machines at <br />various City-owned facilities that include, but are not limited to, recreation <br />and community centers, parks, City Hall, the Library, the Corporate Yard, <br />the Police Administration and holding facility, and the Train Depot. <br />D. The City of Santa Ana is committed to addressing obesity and diabetes- <br />related illness among Santa Ana residents by improving food and physical <br />activity environments. <br />E. The policy will establish that no less than fifty (50%) percent of the food <br />and beverage selections offered be of a healthy variety at all City-owned <br />facilities. <br />F. City staff will coordinate with the vending companies to implement this <br />policy at the various City locations. <br />Section 2. The City Council of the City Of Santa Ana hereby directs the City <br />Manager to adopt a policy for vending machines in all city facilities to contain no less <br />than fifty (50%) percent health snacks. A copy of the administrative policy on healthy <br />snacks in vending machines is attached hereto at Exhibit A. The City Manager may <br />modify this policy from time to time provided such modification conforms with the spirit <br />and intent of this resolution. <br />Resolution No. 2006-XXX <br />55B-3 Page 1 of4 <br />
