City of Santa Ana <br />Administrative <br />"~-~ Policies and Procedures <br /> Cit Mana er's Authorization <br />Subject Date <br />HEALTHY SNACKS IN VENDING MACHINES August 21, 2006 <br />PURPOSE <br />To establish a policy that ensures that no less than 50 percent of the food and <br />beverages provided in all vending machines located at City-owned facilities are of a <br />healthy variety. <br />POLICY STATEMENT <br />The City of Santa Ana is strongly committed to addressing obesity and diabetes-related <br />illnesses among Santa Ana residents by ensuring that no less than 50 percent of the <br />food and beverage selections offered in all vending machines located at City-owned <br />facilities are of a healthy variety. <br />DEFINITION OF HEALTHY VARIETY <br />The definition of healthy beverages and snacks shall be determined by the City <br />Manager or his designated representative. In general terms, however, foods <br />considered to be of a healthy variety shall include items such as baked chips, fruit <br />snacks, pretzels, granola, and nuts. Beverages considered to be of a healthy variety <br />shall include such items as water, low fat milk products, natural fruit juice drinks, and <br />sports drinks. <br />POLICY GUIDELINES <br />1. This policy shall apply to all vending machines located in City-owned facilities, <br />whether accessible by the public or not. City-owned facilities include parks, <br />recreation and community centers, the Library, City Hall, the Corporate Yard, <br />the Police Administration and Holding Facility, and the Train Depot. <br />2. The City staff shall work closely with its vending machine companies to <br />ensure that the provision of not less than 50 percent healthy food and <br />beverage selections is negotiated in the terms of all future contract <br />agreements. <br />Exhibit A <br />Resolution No. 2006-XXX <br />55 B-6 Page 4 of 4 <br />
