She is <br />motivated to garner support and referrals for and to OCYC after-school programs, which <br />include the boxing club, from local business and government leaders <br /> <br />Staff Qualifications: <br /> <br />Anthony Serrano, Sports Club Director, has a certificate in drug/alcohol counseling and <br />has worked as a drug/alcohol counselor for over 7 years. He is also an accomplished <br />boxing coach, having trained our young boxers to win local and national championships. <br />He is enthusiastic about our programs and thus effective in sharing this enthusiasm with <br />Santa Ana school administrators, thus getting referrals to the boxing. <br /> <br />Isabel Monje, After-School Club Director, has served as program director for other non- <br />profit organizations for over lO years. She is a valued employee who has proven capable <br />of communicating the OCYC mission to Santa Ana school administrators. <br /> <br />Rachel Urbine, Teacher/Tutor, has served in this capacity with OCYC after-school <br />programs since March 2005. She is working on a teaching credential at Biola University. <br />She is one of our most outstanding mentor/teachers. She has the unique ability to show <br />empathy and command respect and cooperation simultaneously. She has proven <br />successful in motivating students to perform at higher level than thought possible. She is <br />enthusiastic in her work with our youth. <br /> <br />Sufficient Recruitment Staff: <br /> <br />The OCYC staff members are enthusiastic about and committed to the after-school <br />programs, including the boxing club. We have three staff members actively involyed in <br />networking with local schools, business, along with county and city government <br />agencies. They collectively, put in 24 hours a week in relaying to individual school <br />administrators, businessmen, government leaders the OCYC mission and heart to provide <br />a future and hope to youth who have little future or hope. The hope begins at redirecting <br />negative behaviors (e.g., poor academic performance, deviant/criminal behaviors, <br />drug/alcohol use etc...) to positiye behaviors (e.g., good academic performance, positive <br />character development, and drug/alcohol abstinence etc...), then the future begins. As a <br />result of these youth are equipped to meet standards for academic and career success. <br /> <br />Performance Success: <br /> <br />The Orange County Youth Commission has served Santa Ana inner city youth since <br />1997. We have been extremely successful in redirecting youth who attend our after- <br />school programs. In fact, we have requests from non-participating schools to open clubs <br />on their campus, and have plans to do so. As prior mentioned, many of our boxing club <br />members have raised their GP A from as low as 1.0 to 3.5 and up. The reason for this <br />kind of success is that the boxing club serves a two-fold purpose. First the prospect of <br />becoming a member of the boxing team, alone, serve as an incentive for the youth to <br />meet required GP A Second, the sport of boxing serves as a tool to teach necessary <br /> <br />9 <br />
