<br />About the Organization <br /> <br />Description of Proposer <br />Taller San Jose (St. Josepb's Worksbop) is a non-profit, faitb-based organization wbose sole <br />pUlpose is to work witb undereducated and unskilled young adults. Since 1 995, TSJ bas worked <br />witb more tban 3,000 young adults in Santa Ana and tbe surrounding communities. TSJ is a <br />multi-servIce program providing: a high school diploma program, , mentoring and counseling <br />services, life skills. Job-preparation, job-placement and job coacbing, bus passes and cbildcare <br />SUPP0l1 as well as vocational programs in for construction, infonnatlon tecbnology and <br />convalescent nurses assistant. <br /> <br />Tbe typical TSJ student sbares seven of tbe followll1g cbaracteristics: <br /> <br />. Is Latillo <br />. Is between the ages of 18-28 <br />. Has /lot completed high school <br />. Is a parellt <br />. Speaks both English alld Spall ish <br />. Lives in over-crowded housing <br />. Is ullemployed or underemployed <br />. Has beell incarcerated or has been involved ill gallgs, drugs, or crime <br /> <br />TSJ developed seven core goals for out-of-school youtb and all program components work <br />toward helping students to achieve these ends. Within the period of one year, students are asked <br />to complete five oftbe following objectives: <br /> <br />. Obtain a GED or complete a diploma program <br />. Master basic computers skills <br />. Attain a driver's license <br />. Open a bank account and use it <br />. Stay crime free for a minimum of one year <br />. Register to vote <br />. Get a job that pays above minimum wage <br /> <br />TSJ serves as a structured and supP0l1ive environment in the center of the city for young people <br />who are caught in tbe cycle of poverty and need further training to become financially <br />independent. Y outb are empowered to become self-reliant, productive adults within one year of <br />their enrollment. <br /> <br />Over the last ten year, Taller San Jose has been recognized for its work with the hardest to serve <br />youth and young adults. The program was awarded tbe Audrey Nelson Award as one of six <br />programs in the country noted for creative use of Community Development Funding. Likewise, <br />the Pew Charitable Trust named TSJ as one of 19 programs in the country that it has chosen to <br />research and study. Tbis research project, Wanted: Solutionsfor America, has identified <br />programs which creatively address society's most critical issues. <br /> <br />7 <br />
