In response to Councilmember Franklin's inquiry about specific programs aimed at small business <br />development, Nunn said that small businesses benefit primarily through accessing the Work <br />Center and participating in "Breakfast for Business" meetings. She also indicated a "One-Stop <br />Center" for financial assistance/information is being developed by the Southland Economic <br />Development Corporation as part of the Empowerment Zone. <br /> <br />Councilmembers commented on several related issues. Mayor Pulido asked staffto investigate <br />the City of San Jose's approach to "globalization" of its business community. <br /> <br />WS.C. URBAN DESIGN ELEMENT <br /> <br />Planning and Building Agency Executive Director Robyn Uptegraff re-introduced Senior Planner <br />JeffRice who briefly discussed the Revised Draft Urban Design Element of the General Plan with <br />emphasis on the goals relating to the physical appearance of the City, particularly such features as <br />streetscapes, nodes to foster entertainment, cultural and business activities, landmarks and <br />gateways. <br /> <br />Mayor Pulido thanked stafftbr the informative presentation. <br /> <br />COMMENTS <br /> <br />90.A. PUBLIC COMMENTS <br /> <br />There were no comments from members of the public. <br /> <br />90.B. <br /> <br />COUNCIL COMMENTS <br /> <br />Councilmember McGuigan commended John Raya and Mary Lara for encouraging City youth <br />participation in the TKO Amateur Boxing Program and announced that an amateur boxing event <br />open to the public with an admission fee of $500 is set for I:00 p.m. on June 21, 1998, at <br />Spurgeon and Main Streets. <br /> <br />Ill response to Councilmember Lutz' concern that the City's graffiti removal contractor was not <br />meeting previous standards in matching paint to cover graffiti particularly along South Main <br />Street, Public Works Agency Executive Director Jim Ross indicated he would investigate. <br /> <br />Mayor Pulido asked that the meeting be adjourned in melnory of Parks, Recreation and <br />Connnunity Services Agency Parks Maintenance employee Antonio Navarro who recently died in <br />a job accident. <br /> <br />CITY COUNCIL MINUTES 173 JUNE 15, 1998 <br /> <br /> <br />
