As the existing southerly structure is only 19 -feet
wide it will not provide for the maintenance of traffic and
pedestrians in a single stage of work. We have developed a
two stage approach to resolve this issue, as described below
and shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Stage 1: To provide adequate room for one lane of traffic
in each direction plus pedestrians, the northerly structure
will require a partial demolition. By demolishing a 21 -foot
portion of the existing bridge, it will allow the construction of
a 49 -foot segment of the new northerly structure. During this
construction, a five-foot pedestrian walkway will be provided
separated by temporary k -rail from the vehicular traffic and
a chain link fence would be affixed to the existing guard rail
to provide additional safety at the edge of the bridge.
One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained with
13 -foot lanes. Adequate distance exists to safely transition the
traffic to the south, and access will be maintained to adjacent
properties at all times. The mobile home park in the northeast
DMJM HARRIS I AECOM
quadrant will require 2 phased approach to construct the new
driveway to maintain access.
Additional work in this phase will include the retaining wall
construction adjacent to the aforementioned mobile home
park, the construction of the roadway approaches on the north
side of First Street, and the realignment of the maintenance
access road to the river.
Stage 2: Traffic will be transitioned onto the newly constructed
north half of the structure, and the pedestrians will use the
new northerly sidewalk. Ample room exists for 14 -foot lanes
to provide additional room for the vehicles adjacent to the
curb and the temporary k -rail. Access will be maintained to
all adjacent parcels during this stage of work.
The remaining 20 -feet of the existing northerly structure
will be demolished and the final portion of the northerly
structure will be constructed, along with the southerly 7.5 -foot
widening. The roadway and slope work for the approaches
will also be constructed on the south side of First Street.
1 -figure 7.
