SANTA ANA CITY COUNCIL COMMITTEE <br />PUBLIC SAFETY <br />Minutes of Meeting <br />June 26, 2007 <br />CALL TO ORDER <br />The meeting was convened at 5:40 p.m. at City Hall, 20 Civic Center Plaza, Stn <br />Floor, Santa Ana, California. <br />ATTENDANCE <br />Council members present: Claudia Alvarez, David Benavides, and Sal Tinajero. <br />Staff present: Assistant City Attorney Paula Coleman, Police Chief Paul Walters, <br />Interim Fire Chief Steve Critchfield, Exec. Asst. to the City Manager Mark <br />Lawrence, and Recording Secretary Janet Chop. <br />SUMMARY OF DISCUSSIONS <br />APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br />Approved Minutes of the May 15, 2007 meeting. <br />2. POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENT ASSESSMENT NEEDS <br />Chief Walters and Interim Chief Critchfield reviewed the assessment and <br />increased staffing needs for ,their respective departments with the <br />Committee. This item will be placed on the agenda of next few meetings. <br />3. WEED AND SEED PHILOSOPHY <br />Chief Walters discussed the Weed and Seed philosophy, which is the <br />concept of using City Departments to come together as a City team to <br />permanently change the environment of a specific area. He reviewed the <br />original Weed and Seed sites and the expanded areas, which will include <br />the 800 block of South Townsend and the 1900 block of West Mrytle. <br />Using this same model, Community Policing Problem Solving is used now <br />to make long- term positive changes in this area and other problem areas <br />of the City. <br />4. SCHEDULE JULY PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE MEETING <br />After discussion, it was decided that the next Public Safety meeting would <br />be July 31, 2007. <br />PUBLIC COMMENTS <br />There were no public present. <br />COMMITTEE MEMBER COMMENTS <br />There were no additional Committee member comments. <br />13 B-5 <br />
