<br />Orange Count)' Youth Commission <br />Santa Ana, California <br /> <br />We intend to require that our boxing club members maintain a 2.0 GPA in order to attend <br />boxing tournaments and to continue to attend after-school boxing activities. In order to <br />ensure that these youth maintain appropriate GP A and increase in literacy and nUilleracy <br />scores, we intend to offer one-hour tutoring service prior to boxing activity. <br /> <br />Staff will attend monthly meetings to make sure we are implementing the program <br />correctly and quickly adjusting the program to new requirements or assessment data. <br />Staff will meet regularly to evaluate program goal attainment, including recruitment and <br />goal setting and achievement. We will keep in contact with WIA staff and be monitored <br />by them during the program. Case managers will go through files regularly and students <br />will be assessed prior to the program and during the program to ensure they are making <br />progress as well as at the end of the program. <br /> <br />PROGRAM DESCRIPTION <br />Overall Services to the WIA participant: <br /> <br />. Referrals to other youth-serving <br />agencies in and out of the Youth <br />Council Network. <br /> <br />We have numerous partnerships and collaborations such as with other service providers <br />and with employers. Thus, we can make referrals to other agencies as needed, and our <br />relationships with businesses can lead to employment for our youth. When Mel Trudel, <br />owner of Custom Comfort mattresses carne to speak at the Club, he met and hired one of <br />the boxers. SA Police Sergeant Henry Esparza works out at the gym and is mentoring one <br />of our youth. This youth also received the chance for job-shadowing at a drug counseling <br />agency, and was subsequently hired there. <br /> <br />Case Management/Intake Assessment: <br /> <br />Anthony Serrano, Sports Club Director, and the tutors will share intake assessment <br />responsibilities. Anthony will administer original T ABE test. Anthony will interview <br />prospective youth to ensure that they meet all WIA requirements for program entry. <br />Anthony functions as our case management supervisor overseeing a staff of tutors who <br />provide distinctive case management activities. Tutors will observe and note their <br />observations providing feedback to Anthony and case managers. Two tutors will be in <br />charge of case notes collected during the tutoring process. Notes are maintained on <br />academic progress or challenges, attitudes, behaviors, performance and any other <br />
