<br />SANTA ANA CITY COUNCIL COMMITTEE <br />PUBLIC SAFETY <br />Minutes of Meeting <br />September 25, 2007 <br /> <br />CALL TO ORDER <br />The meeting was convened at 5:40 p.m. at the Santa Ana City Hall, 20 Civic <br />Center Plaza, 8th Floor Conference Room, Santa Ana, California. <br /> <br />ATTENDANCE <br />Council members present: Claudia Alvarez, David Benavides, and Sal Tinajero. <br /> <br />Staff present: City Manager Dave Ream, City Attorney Joe Fletcher, Assistant <br />City Attorney Paula Coleman, Police Chief Paul Walters, Interim Fire Chief Steve <br />Critchfield, Police Deputy Chief Pete Jensen, Police Deputy Chief Tony <br />Harrelson, Public Works Maintenance Services Manager Will Hayes, Ass!. to City <br />Manager Mark Lawrence, Police Corporal Jose Gonzalez, and Recording <br />Secretary Janet Chop. <br /> <br />Public present: Sean Mill, Santa Ana. <br /> <br />SUMMARY OF DISCUSSIONS <br /> <br />1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br />Approved Minutes of the August 28, 2007 meeting. <br /> <br />2. TOP 10 PROBLEM LOCATIONS PER POLICING DISTRICT STUDY <br />After discussion, the report was received and filed for reference <br />information. <br /> <br />3. WORKING WITH SAUSD REGARDING GRAFFITI AND RESTITUTION <br />Tony Harrelson and Will Hayes gave an update on the graffiti problem in <br />the City and the process for removal. They related that the Graffiti Task <br />Force is interfacing with the Santa Ana Unified School District with <br />interaction through PTAs, intermediate and elementary schools and <br />school police. Will Hayes stated that money has been acquired to pay <br />for give-away items with logos and advertising to send message on graffiti <br />issue and also to put together a video. <br /> <br />Committee member Benavides suggested that reformed taggers and/or <br />their parents could speak at schools to help create pride in keeping the <br />city and schools clean. <br /> <br />Chief Walters said the Police Department would be adding extra <br />detectives to the Graffiti Task Force in the near future. <br />
