Resume for Steve PonTell <br />Overview: Steve has extensive background in organizational and community development. Spending the <br />first 10 years of his career as the president and CEO of three different non-profit business organizations, <br />Steve developed insights into the inner workings of communities and non-profit organizations. Steve then <br />launched his own consulting firm - The @Work Consulting Group. Working with his partners to create <br />the workplace of the future, they successfully implemented innovated projects across the country. For the <br />last five years Steve has served as the CEO of the De Oro Group (www.deorogroup.com), one of <br />California's largest and fastest growing mortgage brokers, real estate, and development companies <br />focused on the Latino marketplace. Steve has an undergraduate degree in City and Regional Planning <br />from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and a Master's Degree in Business from the Drucker Center at Claremont <br />Graduate University. <br />Current Responsibilities <br />President of the La Jolla Institute (LJI): Founded in 1996 by Steve PonTell, La Jolla Institute is a non- <br />profit 501(c)(3) think tank that focuses on the future of cities from an economic perspective. Steve, as <br />President the La Jolla Institute (www.lajollainstitute.org), has produced an important body of work that <br />has created critical thinking on issues affecting the future of our communities. These reports have <br />included: <br />o The Next Act - Southern California's New Economy — in the depths of the recession most media <br />pundits had written of The Southern California economy as a permanent basket case. We were <br />able to identify the foundations for the future upon which the economy would rise again <br />including: the highest concentration of creativity on the planet; waves of immigrants creating <br />ethnic diversity as an incredible asset, and a small business culture that produce resiliency and <br />variety that would allow growth based on macro economic forces. <br />o California — A Prospectus for the 2151 Century — A similar work that focused on the State of <br />California as a whole. <br />o MainStreet 2020 — A look at the future of retail in the internet age. <br />o Southern Califomia at the Crossroads — Business Leadership in the New Economy — A critical <br />look at the declining participation of business leaders in community leadership. <br />o Pioneers of the 21 " Century — Asking the question "Is there really a difference between the <br />business models in the new economy versus the old economy?" <br />o Rewarding Ambition — Opportunities and Obstacles for Latino Home Ownership. With home <br />ownership as the cornerstone of economic achievement — does the growing Hispanic population <br />have the opportunity to participate?
