Mayor Pro Tem Alvarez, Chair of the Council's Public Safety <br />Committee, and Paul Walters, Chief of Police, gave an overview of the <br />recent emphasis by the Public Safety Committee and also of two task <br />forces formed to eradicate the illegal gang activity and improve the <br />quality of life for the residents of the Bishop Manor Condo Complex <br />and the Townsend Street neighborhood (700-900 South Townsend) <br /> <br />. Ava Steaffens, CEO/President of KidWorks, gave a tour of the <br />Donahue Center facilities and explained the services the center <br />provides to the challenged neighborhoods within central Santa Ana <br />through education, character formation, and personal development <br /> <br />. The Council discussed the role of the non-profit organizations in Santa <br />Ana. Members noted that it would be useful in reviewing funding <br />requests through the Community Development Block Grant process if <br />organizations would provide a dollar amount for the services provided <br />each child or resident, and an estimate of the number of individuals <br />served by the respective agencies. <br /> <br />. Steve Harding, Deputy City Manager for Development Services gave a <br />brief overview of the East Lake Project in Atlanta, Georgia, and <br />explained how a neighborhood was transformed.
