MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING <br />OF THE CITY COUNCIL COMMITTEE ON <br />PARKS, RECREATION, EDUCATION AND YOUTH <br />NOVEMBER 7, 2007 <br />CALL TO ORDER <br />The meeting convened at 5:30 p.m. in the City Hall; Room 831, 20 Civic Center Plaza, <br />Santa Ana, California.- - <br />ATTENDANCE <br />Council members Present Michele Martinez (Chair); Vincent Sarmiento' <br />Councilmember(s) Sal Tinajero <br />Absent: <br />Staff Present: Cathy Standiford, Assistant City Manager; Gerardo Mouet, <br />Executive Director; Jose Sandoval, Assistant City Attorney; <br />Ron Ono, Administrative Services Manager; Alma Flores, <br />Sr. Management Assistant; Thom Serafin, SAPD; John <br />Gabelman, SAPD; Hiram Uribe, Graphic Designer <br />Public Present None <br />1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br />• Minutes of August 16, 2007 approved as presented <br />Councilmember Martinez requested the Police Athletic League item be moved up on the <br />agenda. <br />2. POLICE ATHLETIC AND ACTIVITIES LEAGUE (PAAL) <br />Staff presented a power point report on the Police Athletic Program at McFadden <br />Center. This program is focused on a Youth Crime Prevention, Sportsmanship <br />(teamwork, discipline, ma#urity and good citizenship) and Trust and Understanding <br />between youth and law enforcement. It is known that youth involved in <br />extracurricular activities are less likely to participate in high-risk illegal behavior. <br />The Santa Ana Police .Department, The Santa Ana Police Officers Association and <br />Parks, Recreation and Community Services Agency worked cooperatively to form <br />PAAL on June 18, 2007 at McFadden Center. The program provides educational <br />opportunities, athletic programs and recreational activities. There are currently 175 <br />participants registered in the program and a waiting list of 70 kids between the ages <br />of 7 and 12 years old. <br />Discussion ensued <br />PREY Regular Meeting -MINUTES ~ A w _~ November 7, 2007 <br />
