REQUEST FOR <br />COUNCIL ACTION <br />CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: <br />FEBRUARY 4, 2008 <br />TITLE: <br />APPOINTMENT OF MEMBER TO THE <br />SANTA ANA WORKFORCE INVESTMENT <br />BOARD <br />O" <br />'~~ <br />CITY MANAGER <br />RECOMMENDED ACTION <br />CLERK OF COUNCIL USE ONLY: <br />APPROVED <br />^ As Recommended <br />^ As Amended <br />^ Ordinance on 15t Reading <br />^ Ordinance on 2"d Reading <br />^ Implementing Resolution <br />^ Set Public Hearing For <br />CONTINUED TO <br />FILE NUMBER <br />Appoint Mr. Asif Syed, Contracts Administrator, Goodwill Industries of <br />Orange County, as a public sector member on the Santa Ana Workforce <br />Investment Board. <br />WORKFORCE INVESMENT BOARD RECOMN~NDATION <br />At its regular meeting of January 18, 2008, by a vote of 18:0 (Chapman, <br />Didion, Figueroa, Fischer, Lacroix, Martinez, Metzler, Oakes, Ortega, <br />Pina, Ray, Wadhera, Ward, Zarate absent), the Workforce Investment Board <br />recommended that the City Council appoint Mr. Asif Syed, Contracts <br />Administrator, Goodwill Industries of Orange County, as a public sector <br />member on the Santa Ana Workforce Investment Board. <br />DISCUSSION <br />On March 6, 2000, the Santa Ana City Council adopted a resolution <br />establishing the Santa Ana Workforce Investment Board and appointed 35 <br />members. In accordance with the federal legislation, a majority of the <br />Board members and the Board Chair must come from the private sector. The <br />remaining Board members represent education, non-profit organizations, <br />one-stop mandated partners and local labor organizations. <br />There is currently one public sector vacancy on the Board due to the <br />recent resignation of Nancy Quarles of Goodwill Industries of Orange <br />County. Since Goodwill is involved with the training and placement of <br />adults with disabilities and is known nationwide, the Santa Ana Workforce <br />Investment Board (WIB) is pleased that Mr. Asif Syed, also of Goodwill <br />Industries has volunteered to replace Ms. Quarles as a WIB Board member. <br />Mr. Syed's resume and membership profile are attached (Exhibit 1). <br />13C-1 <br />
