<br />SANTA ANA CITY COUNCIL COMMITTEE <br />PUBLIC SAFETY <br />Minutes of Meeting <br />March 24, 2008 <br /> <br />CALL TO ORDER <br />The meeting was convened at 5:40 p.m. at the Santa Ana Police Department, 60 Civic <br />Center Plaza, 4th Floor Conference Room, Santa Ana, California. <br /> <br />ATTENDANCE <br />Council members present: Claudia Alvarez, David Benavides and Sal Tinajero; <br /> <br />Staff present: City Manager Dave Ream, Assistant City Attorney Paula Coleman, Police <br />Chief Paul Walters, Fire Chief Marc Martin, Police Deputy Chief Tony Harrelson, Fire <br />Marshal Lori Smith, and Recording Secretary Janet Chop. <br /> <br />Public present: Ret. Captain George Saadeh, Drs. William Wood and Eileen Walsh, <br />Laura Morfin, lliana Welty-Soto, Kim McPeck, Julie Stroud, and Glen Stroud. <br /> <br />SUMMARY OF DISCUSSIONS <br /> <br />1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br />Approved Minutes of the February 26, 2008 meeting. <br /> <br />2. FIREWORKS ORDINANCE REVIEW, PLANS FOR JULY 2008 <br />Chief Martin stated that the Fire Department had reviewed the existing Ordinance <br />and were comfortable that no changes need to be made at this time. The <br />education and enforcement components of the plan will continue the same as in <br />2007. <br /> <br />Committee Member Alvarez requested that representatives from Public Works <br />and Parks, Recreation and Community Services attend the next Public Safety <br />meeting to discuss the impact of fireworks on park maintenance and street <br />maintenance. <br /> <br />3. CSUF COMMUNITY ASSESSMENT PROJECT <br />Chief Walters introduced Retired Captain George Saadeh and Deputy Chief <br />Tony Harrelson who presented a power point presentation regarding the CSUF <br />Community Assessment Project. They introduced Drs. William Wood and Eileen <br />Walsh of Cal State Fullerton University who provided the proposed <br />comprehensive research assessment of the gang problem in the City and the <br />areas that would be included in the assessment. <br /> <br />Two members of the EPIC Commission, Laura Morfin and lliana Welty-Soto, also <br />spoke regarding the benefits of conducting the assessment. <br />
