GRANTS MADE EASY -DUI
Overtime
SCHEDULE A
GRANT NO: AL0963
GRANT DESCRIPTION Page 2
The Santa Ana Police Dept conducted five sobriety checkpoints between October 2006 and September
2007.
3. What is the average number of DUI arrests and vehicles impounded per checkpoint?
During the specified period we averaged approximately 9 DUI arrest at each checkpoint. These arrest
were made either on the line during random checks or in the vicinity of the checkpoint. We average 39
vehicle impounds for each checkpoint as a result of driver arrested or an unlicensed driver.
4. What is the magnitude of your city's problem concerning repeat DUI offenders who violate probation or
fail to appear in court? Do you currently have a program that proactively addresses this issue?
It is quite difficult to quantify the amount magnitude of our city's problem with repeat DUI offenders
who violate probation or fail to appear. However, as we conducted a DUI warrant sweep last year we
received information from the court that there were in excess of 4000 active warrants for DUI where the
offender listed Santa Ana as a residence. Some of these warrants were several years old. However, this is a
significant number.
To address this issue, we conducted a warrant sweep in August 2007 which was funded by our current
grant. In addition we have provided training to traffic officers in obtaining additional information from the
arrestees that may assist in locating the offender at a later date. We will also conduct further warrant sweeps
during this year.
5. Do you have a backlog of unserved warrants for repeat DUI offenders?
As stated above, there is a significant number of warrants outstanding for DUI offenders who live in the
city of Santa Ana.
6. How many of your traffic officers have received Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) training?
All current traffic officers have received training on the Standard Field Sobriety Testing procedures.
7. What is your current administrative recovery fee for vehicles impounded for up to 30 days and how much
of the fee goes to the General Fund vs. a special Traffic Offender account? How is it used?
The current release fee for impounds due to license violations is $185. Of this amout, $100.00 is deposited
in to our traffic offender account.
PERFORMANCE MEASURES:
Goals: Goals serve as the foundation upon which the grant is built. Goals are what you hope to accomplish by
implementing a traffic safety grant program.
1. To reduce the number of persons killed in traffic collisions.
2. To reduce the number of person injured in traffic collisions.
OTS-38b DUI Overtime
(12/06)
