<br />CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: <br /> <br /> <br />REQUEST FOR <br />COUNCIL ACTION <br /> <br />CLERK OF COUNCIL USE ONLY: <br /> <br />SEPTEMBER 2, 2008 <br />TITLE: <br /> <br />RESOLUTION SUPPORTING RECYCLING AT <br />CITY FACILITIES AND AT CITY <br />SPONSORED EVENTS <br /> <br />APPROVED <br /> <br />o As Recommended <br />o As Amended <br />o Ordinance on 151 Reading <br />o Ordinance on 2nd Reading <br />o Implementing Resolution <br />o Set Public Hearing For <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />CONTINUED TO <br /> <br />FILE NUMBER <br /> <br />CITY MANAGER <br /> <br />RECOMMENDED ACTION <br /> <br />Approve a resolution adopting a recycling policy for city facilities and <br />for city sponsored/permitted events and large venues. <br /> <br />DISCUSSION <br /> <br />The City has recycling containers in many of its facilities. <br />there are a number of buildings and large venues where <br />containers are not available and city personnel and members of <br />are unable to recycle their bottles and cans. <br /> <br />However, <br />recycling <br />the public <br /> <br />The proposed resolution would establish a policy which includes having <br />recycling containers placed next to trash containers in all city <br />facilities and at large venues. In addition, the operator of any event <br />sponsored or permitted by the City will be required to have recycling <br />containers and to implement a system for recycling the materials and <br />reporting the recyclables diverted. <br /> <br />The Finance and Management Services Agency will be responsible for <br />implementing and coordinating recycling activities in city facilities. <br />The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Agency will be responsible <br />for implementing and coordinating recycling activities at the large venues <br />and at city sponsored or permitted events. <br /> <br />ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT <br /> <br />Recycling increases the life of the landfills and assists the City in <br />meeting its recycling requirements. <br /> <br />FISCAL IMPACT <br /> <br />The cost to add additional containers in city facilities is estimated at <br />$3,000. The cost to add more permanent, concrete recycling containers in <br /> <br />558-1 <br />
